The crystal ball keeps giving Ben and Jaftha cryptic clues that they don't kw how to decipher and they are mystified and troubled as to what is going to happen next. Ben and Jaftha are once again plunged into an exciting adventure when they are left on their own at a chalet on a guest farm in the Drakensberg mountains in Mpumalanga while Jaftha's parents are at a nearby conference for two weeks. They make friends with two girls who are also at the chalets and they explore the area on mountain bikes together. They follow some maps that have been given them by the owner of the chalets and find an underground cave but don't have time to explore. On the way back they are confronted by a group of strangers speaking in a foreign language. These people seem angry to see them and warn them off the mountains saying it's dangerous, the children think the men are hiding something. That night round the fire they are told the legend of a haunted cave in the mountains and later that night Ben's crystal ball warns them of danger. When they go back to explore the underground cave they have to travel along washed out river tunnels for a long way in the dark. They find a cave with a pool and streaming water, and hidden at the back are boxes covered with canvas. They think the men they saw must be smugglers and make a plan to try and catch them at work.
