I countered back with a higher $ amount only to receive a new even higher offer (went from offering to sell for $16 up to $18!) I can only surmise that they did not like me having the nerve to make a bid on the item in the first place. The higher counter bid was meant to irritate me I suppose. Luckily it worked out in the end. They got their money and I got the parts.
