Reviews
"In this stimulating work S. R. Eyre, lecturer in geography at the University of Leeds, has given us both a creditable survey of the distribution and character of vegetations and soils around the world and an example of the application of a promising concept of plant-soil relationships to the theory of vegetation and soil development and to classification . . . Eyre has presented a rather ingenious method of relating vegetation, soils, and human history within a single study." --Philip L. Wagner, Geographical Review "Although advertised as a supplementary text for introductory courses in botany and ecology, among others, this book's importance for botanists and plant ecologists is far greater. Within a small and readable compass it includes not only some basic information on the ecology of soils and vegetation in general but also a fresh, graphic, stimulating, and sometimes erroneous, systematic survey of the mode of functioning, the structure, composition, genesis, taxonomy, history, relationships to man and to environment of both soils and vegetation over the world's surface." --Jack Major, Ecology "Dr. Eyre's World picture is the first British geographical text to deal with the world's biological resources for many years. It is a particular pleasure to be able to report that it is clear and lucid in its presentation of the essentially complex patterns of vegetation and soils and their distribution . . . This book is a valuable addition to the growing number of geographical texts at this level, and certainly merits shelf-space in university libraries and in schools which offer advanced courses in geography or biology." --H. J. R. Henderson, The Geographical Journal "[This book is] the result of an immense amount of reading, and no other book is available in English or at a reasonable price which gives a short outline of either world vegetation or world soils . . . [I]t is likely to be useful as a reference book to many students who are much more advances than those for whom it was intended . . . There will . . . be many botanists who will appreciate the simple exposition of soils and many pedologists who will appreciate the account of vegetation." --E. W. Jones, Journal of Ecology

Synopsis
Vegetation and Soils is an introduction to the study of vegetation and soil distribution. In this accessible work, S. R. Eyre describes the distributions of these two important elements in the landscape. The book progresses regionally, and the land areas of the earth are subdivided according to the distribution of their main vegetation and soil types. The author argues that the nature of the soil is not determined by vegetation any more than it is determined by climate, but the nature of the vegetation always has some bearing on the nature of the soil, and vice versa.Eyre studies the ways in which plant communities and soil profiles develop and the complexity of the vegetation-climatic relationship. The middle and high latitudes are examined, as well as the tropical regions. In order to avoid broad generalizations of vast regions, the example of the British Isles is used to show that vegetation and soil maps can be misleading on a continental scale. The book concludes with a series of vegetation maps, which show the distribution of plant formations. Also included are tables providing climatic correlations with vegetation and a glossary of relevant terms. This classic work shows the intimate connection between vegetation development and soil development. For this reason, this book is a major contribution to the study of the physical aspects of geography and will be of particular interest to students of geography, botany, and agriculture., Provides an introduction to the study of vegetation and soil distribution. - s***n (410)- 買家留下的信用評價。過去 6 個月購買已獲認證Just as described, book was like new. Item shipped in a box, great!, however, the box was much bigger than the book with nothing to hold the book inside so it got banged around inside the box during shipping. Used boxes that fit better or packaging material.Isaiah: A Commentary (The Old Testament Library) by Childs, Brevard S.(#196704147577)
