Released a year after the first Real Bout Fatal Fury, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special is the second Fatal Fury game released under the Real Bout moniker and sixth Fatal Fury game overall. Players can choose from many familiar faces from past Fatal Fury titles, including several characters that were left out of Real Bout Fatal Fury.<br><br>The game returns to the two-line fighting system that was the trademark of older Fatal Fury games. Characters can fight on either the foreground plane or background plane, and can switch between them at will. This is designed to give players a sense of freedom in motion while remaining true to the game's 2D fighting premise. <br><br>Real Bout Fatal Fury removes the ring-outs from its predecessor while retaining the stage-end barriers. These barriers have their own health ratings and can be broken through repeated attacks. If a fighter is hit by an attack that also breaks the barrier, he or she is temporarily dizzied. <br><br>Characters in the game have access to both desperation and super desperation moves. They're accessed through the character's power gauge, which can be filled through attacks or by blocking an opponent's attacks. When the power bar is full, characters can perform their desperation moves. If the power bar is full and the character's health bar is low, he or she can perform a super desperation instead.<br><br>Characters can also use "break shot" and "roll recovery" techniques when their power gauges are half full. The break shot is a technique used to hit opponents during their attack, while the roll recovery gives certain characters the ability to attack straight from the ground after being knocked down.
