Eventually, after resetting my device, cleaning the contacts, and removing the thin protective skin from my iPad, I was finally able to get the keyboard to connect (for now), but this should not have been necessary — my original Smart Folio keyboard, purchased in 2021 when I bought the iPad new worked fine with the skin.
