Synopsis
is a study of Slovak immigrants, focusing on the formation of Lutheran and Catholic churches in Pittsburgh from 1880 to 1915. Many scholarly works have treated the relationship between immigrants and the hierarchy of the American Catholic church, but few have examined the Protestant denominations or made comparisons between Catholics and Protestants. The intraethnic comparative approach of this study provides a basis for a better understanding of how immigrants from different parts of a country in Europe could come together in the United States and form strong ethnic institutions and communities. While stressing that divisions existed within Slovak communities, the study helps broaden our understanding of what constituted an "ethnic community." It shows how immigrants could develop a new sense of community based on shared interest in a church. June Alexander argues that the establishment of ethnic organizations shows an accommodation to American society, not alienation from it. By forming national churches, Slovak Catholics and Lutherans were trying to transplant a cherished Old-World institution. That was not possible. Immigrants had to adjust to New World conditions--notably, the separation of church and state--and, as a result, the churches they created were hybrid institutions. Alexander's study reveals that immigrants were pragmatic, able to adjust to changing demands and situations. They created institutions that enabled them to cope with an alien, industrial society. In the course of creating these ethnic institutions and communities, immigrants were not passive recipients of American culture. Premigration cultural and religious traditions remained strong forces in the lives of Slovak Lutherans and Catholics. By examining social relationships and persistent regionalism, the study assesses how extensively churches influenced the development of group consciousness. The Immigrant Church and Community is based upon a wide variety of source materials. Besides census data, government records, diocesan records, and English-language newspapers, the study relies on material generated by immigrants themselves. It utilizes the ethnic press, records of Slovak organizations, local government records from Czechoslovakia, and interviews with immigrants.
