The eight columns are fitted with screws at the top, which go into predrilled holes on the underside of the top ring. The bottom of the columns have dowel pegs, which, theoretically, fit into the corresponding holes in the base. However, there is no hardware with which to fasten the dowel pegs into the base, so the whole top very easily falls off. I ended up using glue to hold the bottom in place.
