Very fine full tree calf binding with ornate gilt tooling to spine and gilt panels to covers (interior and exterior). Red morocco spine label in gilt. 1908 dated to title page, first edition, part of Seeley's Library of Romance series. Corners lightly rubbed, edges with only a trace of wear, spine tips good with headbands in place. Front hinge very weak, however, very fragile. Upper cover not detached but care required when handling. Book now in removable mylar to assist in supporting the front cover. Sumptuous green marbled endpapers with prize award label to front pastedown for young Hugh Bothwick Paterson, one of many former students from Wellington College who would later enter military service in world war one. Unlike many of his Wellington classmates, this Hugh Paterson is believed to have survived WW1 but later died in 1940 in WW2. Pages lightly toned. Marbled textblock. 26 fine full-page illustrations. A very fine book but for the weak front cover.”
