As in all Arthurian legends, there exist the folklore, magic, romance and challenges between good and evil. This story is the introduction and the birth of the man who would become King Arthur. On a stormy night, Merlin the magician appears at the castle of Uther Pendragon and explains that he must take baby Arthur. There would be a great battle and Uther Pendragon would die. Merlin explained that he would raise the baby, and he would become the greatest king of all England. Arthur was raised by Sir Ector, and became a great horseman and swordsman. One day, when Merlin found the moment to be right, a sword was placed in a stone, and the public was told that the rightful heir to the throne would be the only man capable of pulling the sword from the stone. Of course, many tried, but failed. By accident, Arthur revealed that he was the king, and a surprised kingdom hailed him as their new leader. The pictures in this story are eye-catching and wonderfully support the story. Children will be sure to be hooked on Arthurian legends as a result. This is a fantastic book to read aloud, and the narrative elements are easy to understand.
