Is curating a creative act comparable to the process of art-making itself? Where does the boundary between creating and curating lie or does the hybridisation of current artistic practice render it invisible? The role of the curator within the field of contemporary art has become an increasingly pertinent issue for artists and exhibition-makers alike. Whilst the early 20th Century can be characterised as a period of curatorial experimentation - led, more often than not, by artists themselves - recent years have seen a move towards a more creative engagement in art by the curator, coupled with the growth of curatorship as a recognised profession. What curators do, or more importantly perhaps, how and why they do it, is the subject of an ongoing series of public debates between diverse practitioners at the University of Newcastle. 'The Producers' does not seek to define current curatorial practice. Rather, it provides a unique opportunity for reflection and discussion for those who make and those who attend exhibitions of contemporary art.
