A unique blend of first-person shooter and role-playing game (RPG), Borderlands 2 for the PC is a gun-slinging action sci-fi gaming classic. This popular game, from developer Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, is set on the rocky, backwater planet of Pandora five years after the events of its predecessor, Borderlands. There are four new characters in Borderlands 2, each representing a different class with unique skills and abilities. There’s Axton, the Commando, who can strategically lay turrets; Maya, the Siren, who can manipulate energy to suspend enemies in the air; Salvador, the Gunzerker, who can dual-wield any weapons, including rocket launchers and even sniper rifles; and Zer0, the Assassin, who can utilize cloaking technology to evade enemies and launch stealth attacks. Fans will also be pleased to see the four characters from the original game – Roland, Lilith, Brick, and Mordecai – along with other pre-sequel favorites such as Scooter, Dr. Zed, Marcus, and Mad Moxxi, returning as nonplayer characters scattered throughout the game. Players can choose to play through Borderlands 2 either alone, as one of the four characters, or co-operatively with other players in online multiplayer. Always fresh and persistently creative, Borderlands 2 randomly generates weapons found throughout the game world, varying attributes like damage, accuracy, clip size, and how many bullets are discharged at a time, ultimately translating into millions of possible weapon configurations. Loot is likewise procedurally generated, including shields, alien artifacts, class mods, and grenades. Creative enemy AI is another highlight of the game, with enemies sometimes turning against each other in anger and frustration, allowing the player to sneak past. Enemies of one’s enemies can also be strategically lured into a battle in order to even the odds of victory, while robotic opponents can be aimed at and taken apart joint by joint with well-placed shots. Borderlands 2 has plenty of side quests to find as a diversion from the main story, all showcasing the whimsical creativity of the Borderlands developers. Examples include taking photographs, sitting through a boring party, and convincing a robot that it is human. Side quests, many of which also involve a lot of shootouts, are also a way to level up the player character in preparation for particularly tough bosses in the main story missions. With plenty of downloadable content (DLC) from Steam to discover, including special story expansions and content upgrades, this already vast game offers great replay value. DLC was released in two seasons with additional content released later. Check the online Steam store to browse and download extras as well as to update the game. Visually, Borderlands 2 is just as distinctive as its game play mechanics, with a cel-shaded animation style and a range of varied environments. These include grasslands, caverns, and arctic tundra, all with native enemies and the forces of the Hyperion Corporation. On the PC, visual highlights include higher resolution textures than any version for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), Xbox One, and Xbox 360 along with smoother frame rates, responsive debris, and a more expansive viewing distance.
