Even as a child, Ralph Lauren was always intrigued by the lifestyle of the rich, and as he became an adult, he channeled all of his efforts into not only becoming successful enough to have that lifestyle, but in creating his own version of it. Known for his unique and sophisticated personal style, Lauren began working in the fashion industry in the 1960s, and before long, he had gone from working as salesmen to a designer, creating men's tie and suits that reflected his own view of the world. Many doubted the Bronx-born designer, but Lauren persisted until his Polo line of clothes became famous throughout the world. But there was more to running his business than just designs, and Lauren faced many challenges. He frequently clashed with his investors, who were unable to understand his singular view and ambition, and he struggled with the decision to license his name and image out to other manufacturers, even when it seemed to be the only way to pay the bills. Still he persisted, and his clothes didn't just make Ralph Lauren a wealthy man, they helped define the style of the twentieth century. Book jacket.
