Product Information

What is life for the individual caged in a six-by-nine-foot cell? In 1970 the feds framed Marshall "Eddie" Conway for the murder of a Baltimore city police officer. He was twenty-four years old. They threw him in prison; took him away from his family, his friends, and his organizing; and tried to relegate him to a life marked by nothing but legal appeals, riots and lockdowns, and transfers from one penal colony to the next. But they failed. Forty years later, still incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit, Eddie Conway continues to resist. From his childhood in inner-city Baltimore to his political awakening in the military, from the rise of the Black Panther Party to the sham trial, the realities of prison life, escape attempts, labor organizing on the inside, and beyond, Eddie's autobiography is a reminder that we all share the responsibility of resistance, no matter where we are. Praise for Marshall Law "A truly amazing, authentic African American history lesson."--Emory Douglas, Artist and former Minister of Culture, Black Panther Party "Eddie Conway articulates past and present oppression and demonstrates the need for continuing resistance. Read him."--Bobby Seale, Founding Chairman and National Organizer of the Black Panther Party "A thunderously clear indictment of the ongoing logics of racist political repression and proto-genocidal institutional racism that characterize the U.S. state and the society it has created. Eddie Conway is one of the most significant and, until now, under-recognized political prisoners in the world--we must heed the analysis and political insight offered in these pages."--Dylan Rodr guez, University of California, Riverside and author of Forced Passages

Reviews
In prose both concise and personal, Eddie Conway's memoir is essentially a story about hope. Here is a man who has been in prison for forty years for a crime many people are convinced he did not commit, yet he maintains a realistic optimism in his situation and that of the world. The hope he maintains is not one based on some pie-in-the-sky scheme. Instead, it is based on a practical understanding of the merits and rewards of political organizing. As Conway tells the reader, those merits are not only seen in the programs and other results brought to life by political organizing, they are also seen in the personal meaning they give to those doing the organizing. From the Black Panthers community breakfast programs he was involved in to the various programs he helped organize in the Maryland prison system, Conway proves the values of organizing again and again. -Ronald Jacobs, for Counterpunch In this narrative, summoned from the void that is prison, a unique individual is called into being. Like many narratives of incarceration, Marshall Lawis also the story of a soul that has freed itself. We should take note. Now the state of Maryland needs to let Marshall "Eddie" Conway come home.-Michael Corbin, In prose both concise and personal, Eddie Conway's memoir is essentially a story about hope.
