Product Information
Fort Millard Fillmore, named for the thirteenth President of the United States, was the first U.S. Army fort established in southern New Mexico Territory. Its primary purpose was to control the various Apache bands that roamed throughout the area. At one point, Fort Millard Fillmore in the New Mexico Territory, was the only American Army post in an area that stretched from central Texas to the California border, and from the current city of El Paso, Texas, north to the end of the desert region known as the Jornada del Muerto on the old Spanish road to Santa Fe. It was one of the nation's largest military posts of its era, accommodating up to five companies of troops when most contemporary Army forts housed just one or two companies. That was in 1851 when Lieutenant Colonel Dixon Stansbury Miles established Fort Fillmore just south of present Las Cruces, New Mexico. From Fort Fillmore the very first attempts to pacify or negotiate with the various Apache bands were made. Twice in its early history, troops stationed at the post came near fighting a war with Mexico which, before the Gadsden Purchase Treaty was formalized, lay just across the Rio Grande to the west.
