'Digging the Nuggets' The Paper Boy Review Maybe Paper Boy should have been subtitled 'It's Just a Dream.' The swirling, slightly retro sounds of Jebby bring to mind a familiar place, somewhat shrouded in the mist of the ethereal. Okay, that's a bit of a paraphrase from Jebby's biography, but it definitely applies to this project. I was given a tape of the songs last year, but I intentionally delayed writing a review until the project came out on CD. I think I made a good call. The songs are cleaner and stronger. I can also hear different elements to Paper Boy each time I listen to it. This phenomena is what I like to call 'digging the nuggets.' The key to finding song nuggets is to listen several times to an album in several different places over a period of time. If you get sick of a CD by the fifth time, you've got yourself one nifty coaster. But, I've reached revolution number 30, and I've only just begun to dig. Admittedly, I play some songs on this CD more often than others, nevertheless all of them are excellent. And we're not talking shoe-gazing music here. The lyrics aren't laced with 'buzzwords,'' nor is the artist necessarily pushing an agenda. But the songs do reflect a spiritual side of life that our world so often ignores. The songs welcome the passing interests of the casual listener, yet bring hope to searching souls...and some songs just plain rock (I should have my artistic license revoked for that last comment). 'Happy Birthday to Me' is my personal favorite. Though it sounds like an amazingly dead-on Beatles tribute- you can hear 'fab four' like qualities- it doesn't come across as some Beatles' clone. What really impresses me are (again) the nuggets within the song: the rolling bass line, tight harmonies, catchy melody and chorus, mellotron and slide guitar. Okay, so it may sound like I'm describing a Beatles' song to you, (and 'colours' is spelled with the British 'u' in the liner lyrics) but it's obvious Jebby's having fun. Plus the song flat out works. 'Birthday' is the best card in Paper Boy's well-played hand. Most of the songs on Paper Boy have a solid chorus, great harmonies, and lyrical imagery, but 'Friendly Guy' works best in those three areas. I'm always humming the harmony on that one. And I have chewed on the verse 'Rainy days are bound to come, the sun is not your road crew' during an especially nasty El Nino winter. But I'm finding the words speak more to my hypocrisy than rainy day weather. A jewel that is hard to overlook on this CD is the high production quality that Lance Taber brings to this project. A pet peeve of mine is how some producers will overtake a body of work and make it their own album. That's definitely not the case with Taber. It is obvious that he knows the songwriting talent he's working with, and he seems to know when to steer the ship and when to steer clear of becoming obtrusive. Most of the musicians on this project have worked with Jebby in bands over the years, but this is definitely Jebby's solo CD. The players skillfully add to the overall canvas of sound, but respect the artist's vision. I've heard many of Jebby's songs over the years, but this project is by far the best representation and execution of his ability. From the first snare kick of 'Scarecrow' to the last acoustic breeze of 'Ghost Town,' the songs flow smoothly into one another. Even after listening to Paper Boy for a few dozen times, I'm still finding the nuggets. That's the mark of a good songwriter. Mike Scholl Independent Writer for the Overground.
