This book is an exploration of a body that has traversed centuries of art, a body drawn directly from the Western iconographic tradition, a body investigated, unveiled and displayed, the wounded, racked, dissected, tortured, tormented and crucified: the body represented and presented as a tendency to the extreme. Delving into issues such as violence, eroticism, alienation, fantasy, sexuality, religion, genetic engineering and morality, the body in comtemporary art is contrasted with its representation in works by Caravaggio, Antoine Wiertz, Artemisia Gentileschi and Hieronymous Bosch. Li nks with fashion and music are provided by images of Alexander McQueen and Keith (Prodigy) respectively.
