Atari Greatest Hits combines Atari Arcade Hits: Volume 1 and the unreleased Atari Arcade Hits: Volume 2 into one package. Spanning two CD-ROMs, the collection includes 12 of Atari's most popular Arcade games from the late '70s and early '80s.<br><br>The first disc, originally released on its own in 1999, contains Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout, and Tempest. Disc two contains Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, and Warlords.<br><br>Each game can be played in authentic or enhanced (also known as "alternate") mode. Authentic mode retains the elements of the original version, while enhanced mode slightly changes the graphics and sounds for a more "modern" feel. Game play is not affected.<br><br>Since the original arcade games used a variety of input devices, ranging from a single joystick to a trackball to a spinner, players are able to choose between the keyboard, mouse, or joystick to achieve the best results.<br><br>In addition to the games themselves, each disc contains a section called "The Atari Archives," which contains such nostalgia-inducing items as flyers, scans of Atari 2600 cartridges, promotional art, excerpts from Leonard Herman's book Phoenix: The Fall and Rise of Video Games, as well as an interview with Atari founder Nolan Bushnell. A collection of desktop themes is also included, with appropriate icons, wallpaper, and screensavers for each game.<br><br>High scores from each of the games can be uploaded and viewed at hiscores.atari.com.
