"Splish! Splash! A Book About Rain" is a great introduction to a topic that intrigues children. This book, part of Picture Window Books' Amazing Science series, features an attractive format for young readers or listeners. The water cycle is explained in a very simplistic way that leaves out the role of plants and animals. Rain on the Earth is discussed as it varies in different biomes. The importance and the hazards caused by too much or too little rain are explained with lots of colorful illustrations. Children are reminded that the water we take for granted from the faucet actually fell from the sky. The author has covered major concepts very well and in enough depth to entice children to learn more. As with the other books in this series, the artwork is sensational and clearly enhances the content in the text. The illustrations will encourage emergent readers to stretch their skills. The reading level is appropriate for the recommended grade level (pre-K to 3rd) and the content corresponds with National Science Education Standards recommendations. All the books in the series end with an activity, a glossary, an index, and a list of recommended websites and library books for further reading. I particularly liked a section in the back of this book. It is called "Will it Rain Soon?" and includes folk wisdom about rain. This informative book would be a welcome addition to any young child's library., In clear, lyrical language, these imaginative series titles present basic facts about their respective subjects. Following a descriptive introduction, short chapters contain one scientific concept per spread. Shapes briefly discusses how a cloud is formed, as well as the characteristics of the four major types. The second title describes the water cycle, the benefits and dangers of rainfall, and its role in different climates. In both presentations, Sherman uses vivid metaphors and similes, comparing clouds to scoops of ice cream and rainy streets to mirrors. Supplemental facts, lists of additional resources, sample experiments, and related Web pages will further assist young researchers in their understanding. Both titles are illustrated with softly colored, digitally created geometric pictures that complement the gracefully written prose. These books can be used with Tomie dePaola's The Cloud Book (Holiday, 1975) and Franklyn M. Branley's Down Comes the Rain (HarperCollins, 1997).--Linda L.
