For decades Korea existed as a protectorate of China, paying homage to the mighty Chinese dynasties while minding its own business as best it could. However, sensing weakness in the former regional power after being defeated by the Europeans during the Second Opium War, escalating tensions over Korea between the old power of China and the new power of Japan led to the First Sino-Japanese War. In its first modern war, the modernized Japanese empire went to war against the dominant power in the region, and though interested Western powers favored China, Japan won the day, claiming Korea as their conquest and permanently upsetting the balance of power in the region. The conflict paved the way for the future Empire of Japan and the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. Though both nations modernized, and China far outweighed Japan in terms of men and materiel potential, the island nation handily won its first modern war. Why did the smaller Japan defeat the formerly mighty Qing Dynasty? What did both nations glean from the war? What did Western powers, watching the ancient dragon battle the upstart tiger, think of the war? The answers to these questions reflect both Japan's short-term gains in the wake of victory, and the long term disaster for both sides' new roles in Asia. Rapid delivery but deceptive description. Although the book does cover the topic and has a nice cover, this is overall a low quality product - big print, limited sources, low quality photos (likely copied from online sources), etc. This was not indicated in the original description. I do not have the time to deal with the seller or send it back, so I will donate it to charity.

I am incredibly disappointed. Avoid this seller.
The book (6”x9”x1/8”, 18 pp), arrived with a very sharp crease running through its entirety. While described as “like new,” there was no photograph, no mention of it being creased, no mention of it being a cheap reprint versus the original book.
Further, because the seller failed to ship in a timely fashion (despite my immediate payment on 6/8/24, it didn’t ship until 6/14/24), it took 13 days to travel 15 hours away. Poor communication, too.
