Garrett Morgan was always thinking of ways to make the world a safer place. Protecting firefighters led to his invention of the first gas mask. Witnessing a terrible traffic accident inspired him to invent the traffic signal. Morgan started out without money or education and lived at a time when laws limited the freedom of African Americans, but nothing could stop his busy mind and creative determination.
