She embroiders a sentiment to describe her story's truth of grieving the loss of her family to the fever-worn on the day when sorrow was no more.The dress, intact, is found and refashioned into a welcome home dress by a woman named Rachel Ryder, whose husband is returning home from WW2, 1945. This woman keeps Emma's embroidered sentiment and adds one of her own to the lining of the green velvet dress to welcome her soldier home from the war.This garment is procured by a theater in Chicago where a costume mistress named Laurel Edwards, refashions it into a costume jacket for a prima ballerina in the year 1992. She, in turn, adds her own embroidered sentiment for the ballerina adding to the two other embroidered sayings. The costume is found in an estate sale and given to a young textiles professor named Julie Bayer, who uses the remaining velvet to design and make a quilt for a female patient (Marla Bradshaw) in a rehab hospital in 2007. She saves all of the embroidered sayings, adding one more into the quilt for the woman about to give up on ever walking again. This brings great hope to Marla. Emma's prayer for the green velvet Christmas dress was, "Oh, how I've prayed for this dress... it's going to carry a message of hope and healing that will live on for years." And so the green velvet Christmas dress fulfills its purpose that Emma hoped in. The author, Melea Brock, closes the book with her personal story of her experience with The Green Velvet Christmas Dress-its writing as a play, and then a book while in the midst of her recovery through a physical life challenge.(play version of The Green Velvet Christmas Dress, 2011, 2012)
