Reinhart Poprawe The motivation for writing this book is at least threefold: the extremely promising laser characteristics of high-power diode lasers; their vast application pot- tial in production processes like welding, soldering, polymer joining, cutting, and surface treatment; and last but not least, a 5-year project called "Mo- lar Diode Laser Tools" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which this book summarizes in terms of results and future outlook. TEM mode diode lasers in the power range of several milliwatts have been 00 aroundformanydecadesandtheirapplicationinfiber-basedtelecommunications, CD-DVD devices and bar code scanners is well established. High-power diode lasers in the range of tens of watts were introduced in the late 1990s and their extremely promising characteristics exceeded our expectations for future ind- trial applications in production. Power levels of 50W per 1cm bar at efficiencies aroundandover50%weredemonstrated, thefirstapplicationsinpolymerwelding were shown in the laboratory, and the first large-scale introductions to industrial applications were also realized at that time. The question arose whether - and if so how - those lasers could someday complement classical CO and solid-state 2 lasers, possibly even in the near future. Modular concepts like combining single barsinstacksofupto25hadalreadyleadtothedevelopmentofcup-sizedkilowatt lasers. The possibility of extrapolation to multi-kilowatt, shoebox-sized systems was obvious. Intermsofapplication, notonlyweretheextremeimprovementsexpectedfrom efficiency and maintenance-free operation promising, but also, the possibility of tailoringthebeamprofiletothegeometryoftheworkpiecetobeprocessedopened up totally new horizons for laser materials processing. The example of joining demonstrates the idea best.
