Synopsis
These short stories contain fascinating accounts of Jean's own experiences as a Queen's Nurse post-war. In addition, there are several non-fiction tales which are based on unusual, often comical and sometimes somewhat dubious encounters as she worked with people from varied backgrounds, social classes, age groups and political persuasions. This is a lovely, feel-good book - 'must-read'.Jean Wilson was born in London in 1930 when society was recovering from the Great Depression. She lived through the horrors of the Blitz in which London, particularly the East End docks where she lived, was devastated by thousands of bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe.the stoicism and spirit of the Cockneys ignited her deep interest in people and all through her life she has endeavoured to unlock the mysteries of human behaviour. After years of nursing she trained as a teacher, later taking a degree in Educational Psychology, followed by the University of London Diploma in the Education of Handicapped Children. She was an examiner for various examination boards and was involved in Sir Keith Joseph's efforts to break the 'Cycle of Deprivation'.Jean, who was accepted by the British Psychological Society for testing, also undertook the testing of prisoners released from prison in order to channel them into the most suitable work.New findings and research into brain chemistry are beginning to increase our ability to help people but they also expose many gaps in our knowledge.Jean hopes she has enough years left to make some inroads into those gaps.
