From December 1941 when the United States of America declared war on the Axis powers, through to the cessation of hostilities in Europe in May 1945, the US military presence in Europe during World War 2 expanded dramatically. By air, land and sea, the impact of the US forces was critical in the ultimate Allied victory. Of all the elements that contributed to the Allied victory in World War 2, that of air supremacy was one of the most decisive, yet at the start of the war fighter aircraft were regarded by many in the US as being of secondary importance, mainly to be used in support of ground forces or defending US cities. The main thrust of air operations would be carried out by bomber aircraft, the defensive armament of which it was believed would render them safe from enemy fighter attack. However, once the US 8th Air Force embarked on its mighty crusade of daylight precision bombing from England in August 1942 the shortcomings of this approach rapidly became obvious. Short-range fighter escort was available but once the American bombers reached Germany they suffered heavy losses at the hands of the Luftwaffe. By 1943 the P-51 Mustang long-range fighter had been developed and, in conjunction with the P-38 Lightning and P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bombers, the air war was turned in favour of the Allies.
